How To Buy A Great Diamond Engagement Ring

The first step in successfully buying an engagement ring is picking out the one that you like the most. Do you want the highest quality, the most dazzling, the largest, a diamond of a certain color? Every one of these influences your decision on which type of betrothal ring you decide on.
You may want to start with the setting. This leaves you two main choices. There are professional jewelers ready with a wide range of previously made settings. A lot of these traditional versions only change a bit from maker to maker.
Most people will find these timeless pieces superb choices for their ring. Do you want to have the raised prong setting without much of embellishment? (often called a Tiffany setting) or prefer a more stately piece -- perhaps a three stone setting with a central stone and two side stones -- the previously designed settings will allow you substantial room to shop, both online and off, for your shared idea of the perfect ring.
If you want a more original piece you need to consider jewelry designers, rather than just jewelers. These can be found by recommendation from friends, or by looking through the local yellow pages, by online searches, or at upper level craft events and higher bracket jewelry stores.
A jeweler who is classically trained will know more then a mere counter person or repairman. A jewelry counter person may not know or consider the materials, metal strength and other design augmentations which are the basis of true jewelry design.
Start thinking about a stone once you decide on a setting. Both purchases do not have to be the same. A common example is the use of a fine old stone from a family piece that has become worn or outdated: the combined sentiment of using a piece with family history while updating the style and strength of the setting can be the best of both worlds for many couples -- Grandmother's diamond blessing a new marriage.
If you want or need a new diamond, though, you should work with a good jeweler. Of all the possible aspects of purchasing an engagement ring, this is the most likely to trip up the beginner. How on earth does one ever make a decision on a stone? Do you go for the little stone that has no flaws , the large but with a few flaws, a clear stone but with little fire? How do you make choices on the cut, clarity and carat? Is it better to choose a colored stone? Which is the best overall cut?
to get the best value, you want to work with an experienced jeweler who works with diamonds regularly. You should call jewelry store and schedule an appointment to view stones. You should also indicate that you wish to receive a basic education in selecting a piece of jewelry that is right for you or your partner. Be sure to see lots of choices and ask as many questions as you need.
A jeweler with a lot of skills and experience shouldn't be bothered by this approach. Indeed, a good jeweler should approve of your understanding of your own limits. Before purchasing a diamond you should have a jeweler assess the value of it just as you would with a building.
If you can't afford to pay the price of a good diamond, think very seriously about saving money now and buying a lesser stone or diamond substitute, with the intention of upgrading for some anniversary in the future: a twenty-fifth, when you have the time, the money, and the years of admiration to help carry you through the unfamiliar waters of buying a great diamond to celebrate a great love.
