The Representative Of The Italian Administration In Medugorje
On Tues., April five, 2011, Raymond de Cordona, the Ambassador of the Republic of Italy in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Giuseppe Pizza, the Minister for the Systematic Research of Italian Administration, presented Italy at the opening of the 14th World Economy Fair in Mostar.
They visited Medjugorje on the same day and parish vicar, Dr. Fr. Miljenko teko, welcomed them on the behalf of Herzegovina Franciscan Province. In his interview for radio station Mir Medjugorje, Giuseppe Pizza recounted : I needed to use this little time I had prior to my return to Rome, so I could pray in this famous shrine where I came for the 1st time. I am impressed with easiness of this place and with hospitality of the people. This really is a special place and it is well-known across the full Europe as posted on medjugorjeontheweb.wordpress.com.
The Pre-Croatian Period of Medjugorje
If we were to judge by the caves existing in the area of Brotnjo as well as in the parish of Medjugorje, we will not utterly exclude the possibility of home as way back as the older Stone Age period. From the later Stone Age period, there's material proof of the existence of a pre-Illyrian culture and civilisation in the area. In the older Bronze Age, there's proof of Illyrian clans. Copper objects found in the area are proof of an in depth strategy for living. Some walled settlements on the higher points, supposed "gradine" (castle ruins), which were either circular or square in shape, date from this period.
A double wall surrounded a number of them. In the parish of Medjugorje, there are still existing examples of the double-walled "gradine" : in Surmanci and above Medjugorje itself in Zuzelj. Except for the "gradine", the most eloquent proof of the Illyrian civilisation (which is free-flowing in Brotnjo and indeed in the area of Medjugorje itself) are the graves of the Illyrian dignitaries. In the second century before Christ, the Daors associated themselves with the Romans and waged war with the Illyrian clans of Dalmatia.
Brotnjo first belonged to the Illyrian province of Dalmatia that has its administrative seat in Solin near Split, and from the third century to the setting of Narona. The papers on the gravestones testify that Roman legions and cohorts were situated in the area, and that Roman vet infantrymen lived there. There remain some bits of a road from the time of the Romans, made in the third century.
Excepting that, many Roman commemorative tombstones and objects of daily use have been discovered.The most major archaeological site from the Roman time is to be found in the Catholic graveyard in Miletina, where some remnants of buildings made from Roman bricks have been uncovered it has not been adequately checked.
The Beginnings of Croatian History
At the end of the 6th century, Croatians started to build themselves in these regions.
The area of Brotnjo represented a tribal political-territorial unit, a district, with a tribal regional chief, a district prefect. Brotnjo always belonged to the land of Hum, which in 1322 dropped under Bosnian administration. From 1357, this area then belonged to the Hungarian Croatian King, Ljudevit I. From the mediaeval period, the most famous commemoratives of the civilisation in this area are the "stecak" - actually native autochthones grave commemoratives. In a considerable number of techniques the "stecak" from Herzegovina are much better than those from what's left of Bosnia, Herzegovina and Croatia ; in the number and in the dimension of funeral grounds, in the excellent thing about their ornamentation, and in their worth pertaining to suave elaboration.
In Brotnjo itself there are heaps of funeral grounds and "stecak", in a similar way in the area of Medjugorje. Man-formed crosses with arms raised in prayer are chiseled into most of them. Up to the 12th century, this area was Glagolitic. The famous "Plaque of Humac" testifies to this. In the second [*FR1] the twelve th century a type of the Cyrillic alphabet called "Bosancica" overcame. In the area of Brotnjo, not one medieval Latin inscription is to be found, only Croatian inscriptions written in "Bosancica".
